Riceland Rice

Throughout history, many ethnic stereotypes have plagued advertising industries in a multitude of ways. These negative forms of portrayal, contact and evaluations, have segregated human minds in the way that we view society around us. In the human race, so much of what we see and do comes from some sort of advertisement around us. Creating these social barriers can also lead to huge public perception problems against the media.

An example of stereotype advertisement in the Chinese community is Riceland Rice. The theme stems from a Chinese character that was used to promote the rice industry. Chinese citizens were furious and outraged and a social uproar emerged. It was clear to see that even in the 1960’s, stereotypes extended beyond the black race.

As you can see, these types of ethnic stereotypes create huge social problems among societies. It is up to professional corporations, nonprofit organizations and the media to work together and prevent such conflicts and issues. Without proper cooperation, advertisements will always be constrained by barriers that will hinder fair and equal portrayal.
